NHL debuts on Foursquare

On Oct 7th, The National Hockey League (NHL) became the first professional sports league with a full-time presence on Foursquare, which provides fans to have another way of communicating with each other and also the league. Not only can fans check-in at their NHL related locations (NHL games or events) from the Foursquare application from their mobile phone, they will also receive “insider” information such as tips and facts (i.e. NHL history facts), discounts, rewards, and incentives. By partnering up with Foursquare, this is a key component in NHL’s social media marketing strategy. NHL’s strategy focuses on increasing their audience across diverse social media platforms and also creates more interacting experiences between the fans and the league.

CBS Sports Releases All Sports Blackberry App

CBS Sports Mobile launched a new application for BlackBerry® smartphones on October 25th providing users with the fastest access to scores and news from each of the major professional and collegiate sports. This BlackBerry app is not only free but will also be providing scores and coverage of many sports including: NFL, College Football, MLB, NBA, College Basketball, NHL, Golf, Tennis, and Auto Racing. The CBS Sports BlackBerry app will also provide access to Fantasy football and baseball news and updates. The CBS Sports BlackBerry app opens to display the current day’s scoreboard and can be personalized to only show the sports each user is most interested in. Users can then toggle through all major professional and collegiate sports, with each sport immediately featuring a scoreboard at the top of each section. Additional news and content for each sport, including NFL updates from the CBSSports.com RapidReports network is also available.

This video reflects the popularity of Prop 19 in the sports domain. I thought it was interesting to see a reporter drop out of his journalistic character and report the aromas that were interrupting his original coverage of the game. Since the news station is from the Dallas, Texas area, I thought it was funny to see how a news organization gets thrown off the script after some California cultural practices disrupt the news story at hand. This video demonstrates how news organizations tend to convey the ideas and philosophies of their home region, and when they are confronted with alternative notions, it often creates a scenario for off- the-script improvisation (and a few laughs).

At a convention in Las Vegas this past week for showcasing new media, one of the five sites and set up stations featured was www.myownsports.com. The website works like a Facebook or MySpace, and is designed around sports. Among the features of mysportsnow.com include tracking your favorite professional sorts teams by checking scores, schedules, news and photos. Also, you can manage your youth sports teams, connect with fellow friends and fans in the community and even set up golf times with your friends. The addition of this sports themed social networking site could be a good step forward for merging sports into the era of social networking.
